Imagine a group of typography enthusiasts arriving in the forest without their computers, papers and pens. A couple of them find a lake and some clay. One of them breaks a wooden stick from an old and dried log. A fourth one finds a swamp with a half-drowned lone boot. The fifth stumbles on a rock that reminds them of the letter 'R'. Two more wanderers discover an old lawn mower beside the roadside where the grumpy bus driver left them. We are very keen to see what these typography enthuasiasts and experimental minded individuals will come up with in the unknown territory.
The organisers responsible for managing the summer school and well-being of the participants are Aimur Takk, Ran-Re Reimann, Mathias Väärsi & Vello Lutter. All four have previously finished graphic design department at Estonian Academy of Arts and share an interest in experimental typography and self-initiated design projects. Of course there are many more contributors who will help make ??? Summer School truly unique experience, among others design professor Ivar Sakk with his support and know-how or Eleonora Šljanda with her unique design language that visually manifests the vibe of ??? Summer School.
The summer school will be held in a rural area, and we will be living and working mostly in outdoor conditions. There are 3 cottages on the site with warm beds in each of them, but those who fancy more privacy can bring their own tent. For hygiene, we have at our disposal an indoor toilet, sauna with a shower, and, for the courageous, a refreshing lake. Participation fees involve food three times a day; there is a possibility to use a grill at all times. Pack a lot of warm and waterproof clothes as August weather in Estonia might be unpredictable. Stock up on snacks if you'd like; perhaps bring along your favourite food, or a recipe that we could collectively prepare.
We also want to point out that you will probably not need a laptop, paper or pen throughout ??? Summer School – if possible, don't even bring them along! As we are not in total wilderness nor jungle then we still have indoor facilities where you can safely keep laptops and other electronics or even charge your phone battery.
Please read the text below before registering to the summer school.
??? Summer School will be held in a rural area where all the participants experience close encounters with nature, forest, water, bugs and insects. Please inform us if you have allergies to bees, flowers or any other elements of the wilderness. The summer school will be taking place on the land of a country house in the Lahemaa national reserve. Transportation is possible by bus and by car. The nearest shop, in the Võsu village, is 9 km away from the workshop site. First aid is also nearby. Tutors and participants will be living, eating and sleeping together for the whole week in a camping-like setting – please pack accordingly. Sleeping is organized in collective camping houses but everyone is welcome to bring their tent if more privacy is preferred.

??? Summer School is a week-long experimental workshop with a focus on type design and typography, taking place on August 15-22 in the beautiful countryside of Oandu village, Lahemaa National Park, Estonia. Typography is often closely related to the urban environment but ??? Summer School aims at finding new methods and inspiration in the practice of typography by experimenting with it in rural Estonia. This year we also have a theme: gravity.
We welcome graphic designers, artists, architects, theorists, critics, curators and everyone else interested to participate.
Our tutors are Laura Linsi & Roland Reemaa (UK/EST) and César Rogers (FRA/NL) + guest lecturers.
LLRRLLRR (Laura Linsi, Roland Reemaa) is a studio for architecture, design and research. Our practice is focused on informality, landscapes and politics of space. Our projects span across the mediums of installations, buildings, exhibitions and text production. We embrace a broad spectrum of research and design methods that move between administration and atmosphere.
César is very interested in typography and the tension laying in abstraction or (un)legibility. He has always seen letters as faces who stare at him, with surprising moods and attitudes. He is looking for infinite translations between their shapes, and a state of in-between, of transition, which often leads to him discovering new alphabets.
